  • We specialize in supporting communities in developing projects that are not eligible for “traditional” funding that flows through ANTHC and Village Safe Water. Often these are smaller projects that may focus on upgrades and addressing aging infrastructure without full replacement. We also work with select contractors that can carry out small force-account construction projects in coordination with the City or Tribe. To see if your project might be a good fit, feel free to contact us for a free consultation.

  • We have supported clients in developing housing projects, rehabbing old buildings for VPSO and storage, and to build new community facilities. To see if your project might be a good fit, feel free to contact us for a free consultation.

RECENT PROJECT SUCCESS

Rural Alaska Broadband Infrastructure: DeerStone has led project development and grant writing to secure $168MM in Federal Funding to deliver high speed internet to rural, Tribal communities throughout Alaska.

    • Northwest Arctic Broadband: DeerStone provided grant writing services to NANA Regional Corporation which resulted in a $68.5MM grant award from NTIA’s Tribal Broadband Connectivity program to serve all of the communities in the Borough with high-speed broadband.

    • Tanana Chiefs Conference Broadband: DeerStone provided project development and grant writing to secure a $35MM grant to install fiber-based broadband to Venetie, Chalkyitsik, and Circle. We also supported TCC in getting approximately $400,000 to support Broadband Technical Assistance from federal and non-federal sources.

    • Bristol Bay Broadband: We supported SALMONet, a consortium of Tribes, in securing $8MM in Planning and Development funding to support the buildout of infrastructure to serve 16 Tribes with high speed, affordable broadband services. We also supported BBNA in securing approximately $500,000 in Broadband Technical Assistance awards.

Northwest Arctic Borough Energy Infrastructure: we have spearheaded the development and implementation of energy projects within the Northwest Arctic Borough, focusing on renewable energy solutions to meet the unique environmental challenges. Our expertise encompasses a wide range of services including feasibility studies, financial analysis, schematic design, grant writing, and construction management. We have successfully completed a regional strategic energy plan covering all eleven tribal governments and municipal entities in the borough. Our specific projects include the integration of solar PV, batteries, and wind turbines in Deering and Buckland, as well as the development and implementation of solar and battery projects in Shungnak-Kobuk and Noatak. We've also managed diesel generator replacement projects in Buckland and Deering. Our ongoing efforts aim to establish Tribal Independent Power Producers, supporting long-term operations and maintenance for solar/battery projects. Most recently we’ve supported the Borough in developing the techno-economic case, technical narrative, budget, and schedule in building a portfolio of shovel ready projects including 4MW of installed Solar PV and 7.1 MWh of Battery Storage Project, 859 residential Heat Pumps and a 10-mile MVDC tie-line between Kobuk and Shungnak – all in an effort to optimize the solar energy resources across all eleven of the communities in the region. The proposed project would cost $68.5 million and displace 350,000 gallons of diesel annually.

$125M was awarded by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations to 5 select projects in Alaska for the acceleration of clean energy deployment in Rural & Tribal communities across Alaska.

Native Village of Kluti Kaah, Tribal Infrastructure: DeerStone is working with the Native Village of Kluti-Kahh, a federally recognized tribal government in the Ahtna region near Glennallen, Alaska, on several infrastructure and community development projects. This includes preliminary design and equipment selection, overseeing design engineers, and construction project managing a community biomass and district heating construction project for several buildings in addition to supporting the finalization of construction of a multipurpose building in the community.

Tanana Chiefs Conference, Energy & Broadband: DeerStone works on infrastructure development with the Tanana Chiefs Conference, a tribal non-profit organization based in Fairbanks serving 37 federally recognized Tribes. Our work has primarily revolved around project development and securing funding for individual infrastructure projects, including biomass district heating systems, solar and battery installations, diesel power plant upgrades, and recently, a $35 Million broadband grant to serve several isolated communities. We have also performed power utility infrastructure assessments, conducted workforce trainings, and supported community and economic development initiatives such as developing their rural utility collaborative and assisted in garnering executive and board approval to become a utility owner/operator of broadband and renewable energy assets (IPP).

EPA Climate Pollution Reduction Grant Planning – DeerStone is working with BBNA, Kawerak and The Kuskokwim Corporation to produce Climate Action Plans for approximately 50 communities across the three regions. The plans will align with priority projects that by being detailed in the planning documents, will become eligible to tap into $4.3 billion of implementation grant funding.

DeerStone supported project development and led the grant writing for 4 out of the 5 projects funded in Alaska. Bringing a substantial energy transition for many Tribal communities across the State. These projects received over $115M in grant funds in addition to over $30M in matching funds.
